Acoustic Guitar 2 - Cover notes
INTRODUCTION
When I recorded the first "Acoustic Guitar" album in 1980 it was my hope to soon to follow it up with an "Acoustic Guitar Vol. 2" – another acoustic solo album – preferably entirely solo. For various reasons, however, I decided in 1981 to record an acoustic and electric album –
"Elements". A few years later, I started working as a duo with Anders Roland, and so the idea was shelved. It is hard to fathom how twenty-four years came to pass, but with this CD, my original intent has been fulfilled.
Originally, my main intention in playing acoustic guitar – as opposed to playing electric guitar in a band – was that I dreamed of being my own band. One person, one guitar. So in the interim years, I wrote a lot of music for acoustic solo guitar, much of it with a swing or a groove to it like in a band – but with all parts performed by the guitar. A few of the tracks on this CD are as much as fifteen years old. My plan was to record the music that had piled up – so far un-recorded and un-published. What happened was that – due to the inspiration I received from the guitars built for me by Ole Kehlet – I started writing a lot of new guitar pieces which seemed more interesting to record while they were fresh and present.
All tracks on this CD are recorded solo with no overdubs. The guitars are steel-stringed and I use metal claws on my right-hand fingers - plastic on the thumb.
THE GUITARS
As opposed to the first "Acoustic Guitar" on which I played American Martin guitars, the instruments on this CD are five different handmade guitars built by Ole Kehlet. They are all of an unusually high quality, sound-wise and as far as the playing action is concerned. This is true to such an extent that there are several details that I can do on a Kehlet which simply are not possible on other guitars. These guitars inspire me to go to the limit – and further.
Three of the guitars are small Folk models
- but in different versions.
One is made of East Indian rosewood (back and sides), with a quilted German spruce top (Kehlet Folk: front, pp. 8-9 & label), another is made of quilted bird’s eye maple with a German vintage coloured spruce top and "open" (classical) headstock (Kehlet Folk Vintage, booklet back & cassette back), while the third model is made of Brazilian rosewood from 1957 with a North American sitka spruce top and "open" headstock (Kehlet Folk, pp. 2-3 & 6-7). The latter I dubbed "Rio" in the following.
I also play a big Kehlet Concert model made of quilted bird’s eye maple with a quilted German spruce top. This guitar is of the ‘Dreadnought’ type (pp. 4-5). Last, but not least, I use Kehlet Guitars’ exciting 2000 model, the Kehlet Millenium, made of flame maple with a quilted German spruce top (pp. 10-11). The sound of the guitars change dramatically according to the choice of wood – and this naturally influences the nature of the music.
My track notes indicate which guitar is used on each track.
TUNINGS
I rarely tune the guitars in the normal EADGBE tuning. Actually, all the tracks on this CD are written and played in various other tunings. If you retune just a single string you abandon the tried and tested, and you have to deal with unfamiliar elements. All chords and positions are different and new, interesting possibilities and themes emerge. The track notes also give the tuning for each track.
SHEET MUSIC AND TABLATURE
For those who would like to play the tunes, Olafssongs Music Publishers will soon publish a book – also entitled "Acoustic Guitar 2" – with all the tunes written out in sheet music and tablature. The book also has some illustrations.
Along with the release of this CD, "Acoustic Guitar" from 1980 has been re-released in a re-mastered version, containing some new recordings of other tunes from this period. "Acoustic Guitar" has also been published in book form, containing sheet music, tablature, and illustrations.

Finn, wie haste Dir verändert! Auf seiner 1980 veröffentlichten LP "ACOUSTIC GUITAR" trug der dänische Gitarrist noch lange Haarmatte und Schnauzer - wie man das damals eben so tat. Nun posiert er auf der zweiten Ausgabe fast kahlschädelig, doch der Inhalt folgt dem gleichen Schema: Der auf mehr als 150 Alben beteiligte Gitarrist konzentriert sich ganz auf die akustische Gitarre und spielt - anders als auf der ersten Folge - komplett solo und ohne Overdubs.
Seine melodischen Stückchen wurzeln im Folk und erinnern an internationale Kollegen wie Alex DeGrassi, Peter Finger oder Franco Morone: zwar weniger virtuos und mit weniger raffinierten Kompositionen im Gepäck als diese, aber dennoch liebenswert und gut unterhaltend. Wer süchtig werden sollte nach Olafssons Gitarrenkunst, kann auch das 80er Album "ACOUSTIC GUITAR" nun als remasterte und um vier Bonustracks angereicherte CD erstehen."

"Olafssons neues Album "Acoustic Guitar 2" is, wie der Titel schon andeutet, ein Nachfolgewerk seines hoch gelobten Vorgängers von 1980, den er, wie jedes seiner Alben auf seinem eigenen Label Olafssongs (www.olafssongs.dk) in Kopenhagen vertreibt. Eine kleine Kuriosität dazu: Sein Debüt "Acoustic Guitar" wurde 1980 bereits in Deutschland vom Label Happy Bird vertrieben. Schließlich erscheinen darüber hinaus auch einige dieser Songs auf der Time Wind Collection "Acoustic Guitar". Damit dürfte manchem Leser der eine oder andere Song des nun wieder veröffenlichten Erstlings vielleicht bekannt sein.
Wer den sympatischer Dänen bisher noch nicht kannte, wird auf "Acoustic Guitar 2" einiges zu entdecken haben: Zu hören sind feine Fingerstyle-Songs in bester europäischer Folk-Tradition mit einem gelegentlichen Ausblick über den Atlantik. Vergleiche zu Künstlern wie Adrian Legg, Bert Jansch oder John Renbourn liehe nahe angesichts des verträumten, stimmungsvollen Melodiespiels, kontrastierend zum eleganten Wechselbass.
Aber auch zur europäischer Renaissance-Music, mit der Olafsson früh in Berührung kam und die er zwei Jahre konsequent studiert hat. Rund und warm, brillant und obertonreich klingt Olafssons Spiel, eingespielt auf seinem neuen Signature-Modell des renommierten skandinavischen Edelgitarrenherstellers Kehlet (www.kehletguitars.com).
Geboren 1953, griff Olafsson im Alter von elf Jahren zur Gitarre, wurde Mittbegründer der dänischen Psychedelic-Rock-Formation "ACHE", bevor er 1972 mit seinem Bruder Torsten eine akustische Variante seiner Band ins Leben rief. Längst hat er sein eigenes Label gegründet und sich einen Namen als Produzent und Akustikgitarrist in eigener Sache gemacht. Inzwischen hat Olafsson mit allen Größen der Akustikszene gespielt und ist ein gern gesehener Gast auf allen großen Festivals."
